Small-scale producers wanted to supply emerging south end farmers markets

Molokai spinach, white okra, gbogname eggplant and bitter melons are all vegetables in high demand by South King County’s international communities.

Unfortunately, they are not grown locally and not commercially available. Living Well Kent believes that supplying these and other culturally relevant foods can be a benefit to both producers and consumers.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, from noon to 3:30 pm, Living Well Kent hosts a Small-Scale Producers Networking event at Tilth Alliance’s Red Barn Ranch, 17601 SE Lake Moneysmith Road, Auburn. Organizers hope to gather micro and small-scale growers to encourage aggregation of common and unique crops for sale at new and emerging farmers markets and pop-up farm stands on the south end.

Living Well Kent is a community-driven collaborative focused on creating a healthier, equitable and more sustainable living.

“We are hoping to connect with growers who, after feeding their own families, have planted excess produce,” said Shamso Issak, Living Well Kent executive director. “They may not have enough product or even the desire to supply a farmers market booth alone, but together, as a cooperative, they can.”

The event will be a collaborative effort to support growers, promote locally grown produce and increase access to fresh produce for the residents of Kent and surrounding communities.
