Blossom Nursing Assistant Training School will give away three scholarships valued at more than $2,000 to deserving single mothers who are out of work throughout the Puget Sound, said school president Doris Akinlosotu.

The scholarships will be handed out from 1-5 p.m. Nov. 17 at a grand opening at the school, 24860 Pacific Highway S., Kent.

The school's mission is to help train men and women from all walks of life to become outstanding caregivers.

While Akinlosotu is proud to fulfill a lifelong dream of opening a state-of-the-art school, she has never lost sight of the forgotten ones. She has reserved a soft spot in her heart for out-of-work single mothers.

"Nowadays many heads of household are single moms who have the desire to go back to school, but oftentimes cannot fulfill that ambition because of a lack of funds to realize that aspiration," Akinlosotu said. "Success for me is not only to fulfill that American dream, it also informs my responsibility to help the less fortunate among us."

The school has been training certified nursing assistants (CNA) for more than two years, which leads to certification from Washington state. Blossom's recently was approved by the state to become the first "bridge" school to teach the nursing assistant alternative training program for certified medical assistants.

The program is a way for a medical assistant certified (MA) to become a nursing assistant certified (CNA) after completing 24 hours of additional training.
