Marty Hauer was with department for 15 years
Firefighter Marty Hauer, a 15-year member of the Kent Fire Department, died early Wednesday after a year-long battle with thymic carcinoma, a rare form of cancer.
Hauer joined the Kent Fire Department Aug. 2, 1993 and was assigned to the “A” shift. A longtime fitness advocate, Hauer was active in the development and promotion of firefighter fitness programs throughout his career.
He was a peer fitness instructor for the department and also taught fitness seminars across the country in support of the International Association of Firefighters Wellness Fitness Initiative.
“On behalf of the City of Kent and the Kent Fire Department, we extend our deepest and sincere sympathies to Marty Hauer’s family and friends,” Kent Fire Chief Jim Schneider stated in a press release Wednesday.
“The Kent Fire Department has lost more than a colleague; we have also lost a friend. The Kent Fire Department will be less than it could have been without Marty.”
Hauer, who turned 41 in November, is survived by his wife of 16 years, a 10-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter.
As of Wednesday, funeral arrangements had not been determined.
