Kent School District band teacher Darren Motamedy was honored Dec. 4 as a recipient of a 2009 Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching from KCTS in a ceremony Dec. 4 at the school.

Motamedy, the 2008 Kent Teacher of the Year and popular local jazz musician, teaches at band at five of the district's elementary schools.

As part of the award, Motamedy received $1,500 from PEMCO Insurance that he donated back to the school for the purchase music stands for band and orchestra.
