There’s no money; Ely is not the problem

Our government grew 30 percent in the last 16 years, faster than the general population. That takes my breath away. What a trajectory.

Our government grew 30 percent in the last 16 years, faster than the general population. That takes my breath away. What a trajectory.

So when the government tells you it can make your life better off, then let the government continue doing a great job, like in Detroit, in health care, at airports using TSA, not private security companies, and in controlling those unfunded public employees pension funds.

When I look at sign-carrying Green River College protestors, they need to move their bodies and signs off campus and Kent street corners to the steps at Olympia. Your protesting energy is misguided and needs to be redirected for sure.

Once again, politicians, not statesmen, over-promise and under-deliver massive budgets of taxpayers monies for public education that have since been slashed.

To me, today’s protestors failed Accounting 101. So let me be clear; there’s no money.

There’s an unstable sinkhole in the operating budget of Green River College because Olympia reneged on a promise, because Olympia is broke and passed the proverbial buck to President Ely. So, protestors have to blame somebody for their frustrations and ill-formed opinions, and President Ely is an easy target.

Shame on you. Look, she’s not the problem.

When protestors wake up to the robust lies they willingly and eagerly bought into from elected politicians never held accountable, maybe things will change in Olympia, and maybe even in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Ely must balance the college budget. She cannot print more money. That’s not her job; that’s Janet Yellen’s.

So when the college’s budget is millions short, cuts happen, departments shrink, the strong survive. It’s not wanted. It’s not pretty. It’s necessary.

If cuts aren’t made, what you get is a place that starts to look more and more like a scholarly four-year Puerto Rico. Who wants a flimsy, tainted, wobbly diploma from a sick center of higher learning? Nobody will rush to apply here and it could turn into a vicious downward cycle toward catastrophic demise.

Today, it is fixable. Tomorrow, maybe not.

Protestors, get over it. Suck it up. There’s no money. It’s not President Ely’s fault. She’s trying to turn lemons from Olympia into first-class lemonade maintaining high standards. Don’t like it, then turn to your 30 percent and growing government for answers to your bottom line questions. Protest that.
