Des Moines church gets its first pipe organ

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines has installed its first-ever pipe organ, an instrument the church was able to acquire used from the Golden Gate Lutheran Church in San Francisco. The church has scheduled a series of activities Sunday for the public, to get acquainted with the sounds of the new instrument.

The schedule:

• 10:30 a.m. dedication service -- Pre-service music by organist Dave Kriewall begins at 10:15 a.m.

• Meal -- A potluck that takes place immediately after dedication in the Fellowship Hall.

• 1 p.m. recital -- Organist Dave Kriewall will demonstrate the capabilities of the new organ with a variety of musical scores.

Through the gift of a parishioner, as well as plenty of help from the rest of the congregation, Holy Trinity had the instrument rebuilt by the organ's manufacturer, R.T. Swanson of Michigan, and then installed it in the church. The total process has taken nearly two years.

The organ was originally built in 1964. Today, after its rebuilding job, it has a total of 1,335 and 23 "ranks," or rows, in which the pipes are aligned.
