The state Department of Transportation will close the three right lanes of southbound Interstate 5 from I-405 to South 200th Street nightly from Oct. 12-14 for panel replacement.

The first lane closes at 8 p.m., the second at 9 p.m., and the third at 10 p.m. Crews will reopen the first lane at 5 a.m., the second at 6 a.m., and all lanes by 11 a.m.

On Friday, Oct. 14 to the morning of Saturday, Oct. 15, crews will close the three right lanes of southbound I-5 from I-405 to South 200th Street beginning at 8 p.m., until 10 a.m. for panel replacement.

According to the state DOT, I-5 is a grid of concrete panels. This section of the freeway was built in 1966 and is showing its age. State maintenance and materials engineers have identified 28 panels on northbound I-5 and 30 panels on southbound I-5 that are rapidly deteriorating and are in need of replacement. Crews are no longer able to temporarily repair the panels and need to replace them with new concrete.

Crews will remove the deteriorating panels, install bars to lock the new panels to the old panels, and pour new concrete. Drivers will benefit from a smoother, safer roadway surface and the repairs will help extend the life of this stretch of I-5.

Drivers should be prepared for nighttime and overnight weekend closures of I-5 during construction from October through January 2012.
