Kent Fire investigator looking into Covington organic material fire

March 3, 2013 · 8:12 PM

A Kent Fire investigator is working to determine what caused a fire in the 27500 block of Covington Way SE.

At 1:40 a.m. Sunday, a passerby reported a possible structure fire at the location but was unable to get close due to the property fence and gate. When firefighters from Kent and Maple Valley arrived they found a large metal canopy with fire burning under it made up of peat moss and possibly other materials. No buildings were involved.

Firefighters knocked down the fire and kept it from spreading to nearby machinery or other packaged organic materials.

No one from the business was on location at the time of the fire and the investigator is working to make contact ith someone from the company, which is closed on weekends.

The business where the fire took place specializes in organic and inorganic all-natural "growing media" for the production of horticultural industry plants. It is unknown at this time if any chemicals were involved in the fire.

The fire is under investigation at this time but does not appear to be suspicious
