Kent Police officer fires shots at vehicle that attempts to run him over
A Kent Police officer fired shots at the driver of a stolen vehicle that reportedly tried to run him over at about 11:52 p.m. Thursday in the 19400 block of the East Valley Highway, also known as 84th Avenue South.
The vehicle hit the officer, who suffered minor injuries, according to a Kent Police media release. The driver and two passengers in the vehicle were taken into custody and transported to the city jail. They were treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries suffered when the driver crashed the vehicle into some trees.
The incident started when officers were investigating an occupied suspicious vehicle. The driver attempted to elude the police and parked in the parking lot of a closed business in the area.
When the officer located the vehicle, the driver attempted to flee by driving at the officer and colliding with his patrol vehicle. At that time, the officer attempted to stop the vehicle and fired shots.
The driver, a 32-year-old Seattle man, continued to flee before he crashed the vehicle into some trees.
Kent Police have placed the officer, a 16-year law enforcement veteran, on paid administrative leave, a routine procedure for officers involved in shootings.
Police continue to investigate and reconstruct the incident.
