Renton teenager dies in Kent shooting

Kent Police were still looking Monday for a gunman in connection with the shooting death of a 17-year-old Renton boy. The youth reportedly was shot in the head during an argument among more than 20 young men Saturday evening at a fast-food restaurant on the 300 block of East Smith Street.

The boy was shot at about 7:10 p.m. in the entry of the restaurant, according to a Kent Police media release. He died at the scene, despite efforts by Kent emergency responders to resuscitate him. As of Monday, investigators had not released the youth’s name.

Detectives are interviewing witnesses in an effort to learn the identity of the shooter, described as a black male between 17 and 24 years of age.

“We have not identified a suspect as of yet,” Kent Police spokesman Paul Peterson said Monday.

A number of people, including the gunman, fled the scene after the shooting. Either one or two shots were fired, Petersen said. He added that police are trying to determine whether or not the shooting was gang-related.

The King Medical Examiner’s office was scheduled to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the youth’s death.
