The Kent City Council voted unanimously April 6 to adopt a revised gambling ordinance to allow the Great American Casino to remain open when the city annexes the business and the rest of the Panther Lake area on July 1.

Kent currently bans casinos. But the ordinance passed by the Council includes a grandfather clause to allow the Great American Casino, 20500 108th Ave. S.E., to continue to operate without having to allow other casinos in the city under a bill approved last year by the state Legislature for cities that annex casinos.

Without approval of the revised ordinance, the casino would have had to shut down its 14 table card games on July 1.

The Council approved the revised ordinance as part of the consent calendar, which means it did not vote on the ordinance as a separate issue.
