Seattle Thunderbirds silence Hurricanes | Hockey
The Seattle Thunderbirds got a goal and an assist from Marcel Noebels and 33 saves from Calvin Pickard to defeat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2 Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta.
This was the fourth game of a six-game road trip for the T-Birds. They are 1-3-0-0 on the trip so far. The T-Birds face the Calgary Hitmen Friday, November 11, at 6pm at the Scotiabank Saddledome. They finish off the road trip against the Kootenay Ice on Saturday, November 12, at the Cranbrook Rec Plex at 6pm.
Lethbridge (3-16-0-1) outshot Seattle 11-10 in a scoreless first period.
Landon Oslanski scored at 4:18 of the second period to put the Hurricanes in front 1-0. Jamal Watson and Jaimen Yakubowski had the assists.
Seattle (6-10-0-0) quickly tied the game 1-1 30 seconds after the Hurricanes goal. Justin Hickman had the puck in the high slot and it deflected to the left of the Hurricanes net and right to Marcel Noebels. Noebels skating backwards brought the puck through the crease from left to right, pivoted, and tucked the puck past the outstretched right leg of Lethbridge goalie Damien Ketlo.
The Hurricanes led 25-21 in shots after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 14-11 in the second period.
Mitch Elliot put the T-Birds in front 2-1 at 12:17 of the third period courtesy of a lucky bounce. Branden Troock moved the puck out of the Seattle zone up the left side to Brad Deagle. Deagle gained the center red line, and with Elliot in front of him, dumped the puck down the left boards into Lethbridge zone. As the puck moved around the boards, Elliot charged into the Lethbridge zone through the left circle as Ketlo went behind his net to stop the puck. The puck never made it to the Lethbridge goalie, instead deflecting off the boards into slot. Elliot got to the puck and slammed it into the net before Ketlo could get back in position.
Some hard work by Hickman extended the T-Birds lead to two goals. Hickman forced a turnover in the left corner of the Hurricanes zone. The puck came to Noebels in the left circle and he centered it to Brendan Rouse. Rouse beat Ketlo with a shot over the goalie's glove at 18:02 of the third for his second goal of the year. Rouse extended his point streak four games with the goal.
Lethbridge made it interesting when Adam Henry scored 10 seconds after Rouse's goal to cut the T-Birds lead to one. Russell Maxwell had the only assist on the goal.
The Hurricanes pulled Ketlo for an extra attacker after their second goal to try and tie the game. They had several chances but Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard was up to the task and made some key saves.
The Hurricanes outshot the T-Birds 35-28 in the game.
Pickard stopped 33 of 35 shots and improved his record to 6-9-0-0.
Ketlo faced 28 shots and made 25 saves and his record fell to 0-5-0-0.
