Kent Ravens capture boys basketball tourney title

The Kent Ravens 6th grade boys team won the recent Moses Lake Shootout tournament, defeating Stanwood in the championship game, 45-36.

That capped a 5-0 run through the tournament for the Ravens, an AAU squad coached by Leon Gutierrez and Marty Thueringer.

Devon Proszek had 10 first-half points for the Ravens, draining three shots from 3-point range. Shane Stober scored 11 points during the second half. Terence Grady pulled down several rebounds and came up with some blocked shots, and Jake Ost delivered a solid defensive performance.

The Ravens opened the tournament with a 48-22 victory against Eastmont, then got 21 points from Cody Miller in beating Moses Lake, 48-24. Kent then downed St. Mary’s of Northern Idaho, 46-18.

Miller then scored 16 points, and Danny Torlai’ added 10 as the Ravens qualified for the championship game by getting past Brewster in the semifinals, 50-44.

This is the first title for the Ravens, who began play as fifth-graders in 2006.
