T-Birds tumble to Winterhawks, 5-2

The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-2 Friday night at the Rose Garden in Portland.

Portland (21-4-1-0) took a 1-0 lead at 6:39 of the first period when Taylor Peters scored. Chase De Leo and Oliver Bjorkstrand had the assists.

The Winterhawks outshot the T-Birds 22-12 in the first period.

Seattle (12-13-1-0) tied the game 1-1 at 8:48 of the second period. Luke Lockhart had the puck along the left boards on a power play. Lockhart sent the puck to Brendan Rouse in the right circle. Rouse quickly sent the puck across to Justin Hickman at the bottom of the left circle. Portland goalie Mac Carruth slid across the crease with Lockhart's pass and was out of position when the puck went back to Hickman. Hickman slammed the puck into an empty net for his sixth goal of the year.

The Winterhawks went in front 2-1 at 13:20 of the second when Bjorkstrand scored. Brendan Leipsic and Seth Jones were credited with the assists.

Portland outshot Seattle 15-13 in the second period and led 37-25 in total shots after two periods.

Seth Jones gave the Winterhawks a 3-1 lead 19 seconds into the third period when he scored. Ty Rattie had the only assist on the goal.

The Winterhawks went in front 4-1 at 5:27 of the third when Taylor Leier scored. Peters had the only assist.

The T-Birds cut the Winterhawks lead to two goals at 12:08 of the third on Robert Lipsbergs 10th goal of the year. Rouse fed Lipsbergs the puck in the right circle and he snapped it over Carruth's glove. Shea Theodore had the second assist on the goal.

Rattie scored an unassisted empty-net goal at 18;13 of the third to seal the win for the Winterhawks.

Portland outshot Seattle 15-8 in the third period and 52-33 in the game.

Seattle goalie Brandon Glover stopped 47 of 52 shots and his record is now 11-10-1-0.

Carruth improved his record to 12-1-0-0 by stopping 31 of 33 shots.

The T-Birds face the Kelowna Rockets at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at ShoWare Center. They take on the Kamloops Blazers at 5:05 p.m. Sunday at ShoWare Center.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2012-13 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
