Hoops teams from Tahoma, Kentwood head to districts
While Tahoma’s boys struggled against Curtis for the South Puget Sound League title Feb. 7, the girls put together a win in a loser-out game against Bethel Feb. 9 to continue the season.
Kentwood’s magical moment
Kentwood’s boys, which found themselves in the playoffs after Kent-Meridian was forced to forfeit its wins this season due to issues surrounding an ineligible player, put together a remarkable win in the loser-out game.
With 2.5 seconds left, Conquerors senior Jackson Huerta took the ball on the inbound play, dribbled twice then launched a half-court shot that bounced around the rim and off the glass before falling in to give Kentwood the one-point victory in overtime over Emerald Ridge. It was a Hollywood ending to an unimaginable postseason game. All that remained was a spot on Sports Center’s Top 10 plays — a video of the shot can be found on YouTube.
Thanks to Huerta’s game-winner, Kentwood will play at Bellarmine Prep Wednesday, after the Reporter goes to press, in the district tournament. Win or lose, Kentwood will play again on Friday in the double elimination bracket.
Kentwood’s girls put together a 54-53 win on the road against Skyview Tuesday night. This earns Kentwood a matchup with Todd Beamer at 6 p.m. Friday at Puyallup High school.
Tough matchup for Tahoma boys, big win for the girls
Tahoma’s boys couldn’t contain Curtis guard Dominic Robinson in a battle of division winners Feb. 7 at ShoWare. Robinson had 16 points by halftime while the Vikings had a 39-21 lead. At the end of the game, Robinson led all scorers with 28.
Everything seemed to fall for Curtis, which finished the game 49.2 percent from the field and 6-for-12 from three point land.
Tahoma, meanwhile, was 42 percent from the field but 25 percent from the three point line and 61.5 percent as a team from the charity stripe. Curtis, on the other hand, shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
Tahoma’s boys will host Olympia Wednesday night and will play again Friday.
For the Lady Bears, their 52-39 win Feb. 9 over the Bethel Braves earned them the opportunity to travel for their first district game. Tahoma lost to Yelm Tuesday night and will play Auburn Riverside at 7:45 p.m. Friday at Bellarmine Prep.
