Kent Reporter Athletes of the Week: Kentlake

Morris Schriever (Sr. Judo) and Millie Purganan (So. Dance) win this weeks awards.

The Kent Reporter athletes of the week for the week of Mar. 14 are from Kentlake; Morris Schriever (Sr.) judo, Millie Purganan (So.) dance.

What do you value in your sport or about your team?

Schriever: I really like judo’s concept of mutual benefit and the fact that it’s a sport that relies less on brute force and more on technique.

Purganan: I appreciate the bond that our team has and how dance brings us together.

What have you learned from your sport that you can take with you throughout your life/future?

Schriever: I have learned that mistakes are inevitable on the path to success.

Purganan: I’ve learned to be patient.

What do you do when you aren’t motivated and what helps you stay motivated?

Schriever: I think about my mom and how she once tread the same path that I am on now.

Purganan: I always remind myself, “if I don’t get it done, I’m slowing myself down” and this helps me to stay motivated.

Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?

Schriever: A plain loaf of bread is always good.

Purganan: ANYTHING!

What advice would you give to a teammate that is struggling?

Schriever: Think about why you started doing this sport. What is it that you like about it? Let that drive you.

Purganan: To be patient. You are not going to develop over night!

From the sidelines:

Schriever: Morris is the only Sr on the team thus far. He shows up early every day to practice. He is a quick learner that trains hard and has shown great character. He did judo in middle school and decided to return to the sport. The KL Coed Judo Team is grateful to have him. We are happy that he has taken the challenge!

Purganan: We would like to nominate Millie Purganan as our Athlete of the Week. Millie is a second year member of the Flames and brings so much to the team. Her work ethic is amazing, she always gives 100% and demonstrates our team covenants with grace. She is inclusive, accountable, and finds ways to connect her team with kindness and poise. Millie has a great energy about her and always sets a great example to others. We are thrilled to have her a part of the team!
