Seattle Thunderbirds defenseman Ethan Bear has been named the WHL Defenseman of the Year, the league announced Wednesday at its awards luncheon in Calgary.
Bear, the Western Conference nominee for the award, had 28 goals and 42 assists for 70 points in 67 games this season. Bear has 66 goals and 126 assists for 192 points in 264 career games over four seasons.
Bear was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round, 124th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft. He signed a three-year entry level contract with the Oilers on July 2, 2016.
Bear was named a First-Team Western Conference All-Star for the second consecutive season on March 22.
The T-Birds play the Regina Pats in the WHL championship series starting Friday at the Brandt Centre. The puck drops at 6 p.m.
