The annual Juneteenth Celebration in Kent is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 21 at Morrill Meadows Park, 10600 SE 248th St.

“This highly anticipated, family-friendly event will offer a full day of free entertainment, cultural performances, and community unity to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States,” according to the Kent Black Action Commission, which hosts the celebration.

Juneteenth, recognized nationally as a federal holiday since 2021, marks June 19, 1865—the historic day when enslaved individuals in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

This year’s theme, “Freedom Through Culture and Community,” emphasizes the importance of coming together to celebrate Black history, resilience and contributions to American society, according to the Kent Black Action Commission.

Event highlights

Live musical performances: Enjoy an electrifying performance by renowned jazz guitarist Michael Powers, whose soulful sounds have captivated audiences across the nation.
