Kent Schools Foundation awards $98,000 in grants

The privately funded Kent Schools Foundation recently awarded nearly $98,000 to 39 schools in the Kent School District, providing funding for 161 grant proposals developed by 224 educators.
These grants will fund field trips, manipulative materials for math and phonics, vertical whiteboards, classroom libraries, flexible seating, inclusive PE projects, robotics kits and so much more for students all across the district from preschool to The Outreach Program (TOP), according to a Dec. 17 Kent Schools Foundation press release.
The grants, made possible by generous donations from local businesses and community members, will be distributed across a wide range of disciplines, including science, technology, mathematics and arts education, according to the press release. The funding will enable schools to implement innovative teaching methods, purchase new educational materials and technology and enhance extracurricular programs.
“These grants make such a difference to KSD (Kent School District) staff and students,” said Allyson Johnson, president of the Kent Schools Foundation. “These grants help provide field trips, flexible seating, purchase books for a library or classroom, purchase art supplies and the list goes on and on.”
The Kent Schools Foundation has a long history of supporting educational initiatives in the Kent community, according to the press release. Through its grants program, the foundation has provided thousands of dollars in funding to support projects that improve student achievement and enhance the overall quality of education in the district.
Johnson sees the success of the program when the grants are officially presented to the schools.
“Delivering certificates and surprising the teachers when they hear they are getting the grant just makes my heart melt,” she said. “It is the best part of being a volunteer!”
The Kent Schools Foundation, founded in 2012, works with parents, teachers, businesses and community leaders to enrich school environments and to support students needing extra help, according to its website. It is governed by a six-member volunteer Board of Directors.
