What’s a sure sign that it’s summer in Kent?
Fresh off a 44-7 rout of the Kitsap County Bears in their season opener, the King County Jaguars will play host to the British Columbia Spartans in the annual Cornucopia Bowl minor league football on Saturday at French Field.
Kent resident Jack Zaborac never thought he’d make his living in a bowling alley.
He didn’t grow up throwing strikes or even spares, he said, and he never imagined a life running the lanes would be very lucrative. But fate would have it otherwise.
Now, Zaborac, 83, is the 46-year manager and longtime owner of Kent Bowl, located at 1234 Central Ave. N., and though he says the bowling business isn’t always booming, he’s glad he found his career.
They started out 20 years ago playing basketball together in a Kent Parks Department league. And they’re still playing.
Then, they decided to form a softball team. And they’re still playing that in Kent, too.
And guys such as Glenn Watkins, Rich Marlow and brothers Steve and Mike Redmond don’t see the end in sight.

The Kent Events Center could wind up costing nearly $6 million more than originally planned.
City staff this week asked the Kent City Council for an extra $5.9 million to fund additional costs and features at the Kent Events Center.

Thirteen-year-old Tom Duong attended his first Game On! session early this spring at the Kent Regional Library, 212 Second Ave. N. By the end of the school year he had become a fixture at the library’s twice-monthly video game sessions – not just as a player, but also as a volunteer helper.
