The former Cool’s Cafe building in Pacific succumbed to hot flames Tuesday morning.
Just before 6 a.m. Dec. 1, Valley Regional Fire Authority firefighters responded to an initial report of a trash can ablaze near the 4500 block of A Street Southeast in Pacific.
Upon arrival, firefighters determined that the smoke was coming from inside the structure. They tried to get inside, but boarded-up doors and windows made the going tough. Once they did get in, unsafe conditions forced them out.
After crews had knocked down the bulk of the fire, heavy equipment was brought in to tear down the outer walls of the structure, providing firefighters better access to the fire still burning under the collapsed roof.
As a precaution, one VRFA firefighter was transported to Multicare Auburn Medical Center for evaluation.
Helping out the VRFA were crews from South King Fire & Rescue, Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority, Zone 3 Fire REHAB, King County Medic One, the Pacific Police Department, the Auburn Police Department and Puget Sound Energy.
Northbound lanes of A Street Southeast remained closed for several hours.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
