Two family-owned Kent companies were honored as King County Executive’s 2014 Small Businesses of the Year at an awards program at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue on Wednesday.
Global Venture, a packaging supply business, was honored as King County Executive’s Minority Small Business of the Year. Concut Inc., a leading manufacturer and distributor of diamond tools and equipment, was chosen Exporting Small Business of the Year.
Global Venture was founded about 24 years ago in a small storage unit in Kent and has grown into one of the largest privately held converters in the United States.
The business has diversified and expanded over the years from its humble beginnings into a 40,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that now employs 49 full-time employees representing 16 different nationalities.
Global Venture offers an array of products, from pressure sensitive labels and tags, to RFID (radio-frequency identification) solutions for various industries, including but not limited to, airline, apparel, gaming, healthcare, food, beverage, produce and warehouse/distribution.
Concut, established in 1946, serves local, regional, national and international customers in a variety of industries. It offers an extensive range of diamond blades and core bits, as well as a complete line of equipment, for the cutting of concrete, masonry, stone/tile and other materials.
Because Concut has its own in-house manufacturing and engineering, allowing it be flexible and timely in providing custom-made products for specific job site applications.
King County Executive Dow Constantine, in partnership with presenting sponsors Keeney’s Office Supply, KeyBank, Microsoft Corporation, the Economic Development Council of Seattle and King County, and the Workforce Development Council of Seattle – King County, hosted the fourth annual awards program.
The event celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit in the region, and recognizes regional small businesses for their extraordinary accomplishments.
More than 40 local chambers, business organizations, and cities have partnered with King County to promote the program’s call for nominations, which resulted this year in 162 nominations in seven award categories – a 59-percent increase over 2013.
