Stay rational on health-care debate

I am always baffled by the cries of constitutionality in regards to our current attempts at universal health care.

I am always baffled by the cries of constitutionality in regards to our current attempts at universal health care.

The cries of socialism make more sense, but I don’t see any of the seniors making these complaints giving up their Social Security and Medicare benefits in protest. I cannot think of better examples of socialism than those two programs.

I am also alarmed at how easily people are misled into believing some jack-booted government official is going to arrest you for not complying with the latest attempt at universal health care. We already know for a fact the “death panels” were a gross exaggeration and lie spread by fear-mongering politicians with their own agenda and pockets open to the health insurance industry.

The United States is the only industrialized nation without universal health care and the millions who do not have jobs or work for companies that cannot afford health care in this country do need better options than what are provided today; if for no other reason than the billions of dollars the uninsured are costing us now.

The Medicare Prescription Drug Act of 2003, instituted by the Republicans, was a complete boondoggle and will cost us billions in wasted money, yet no cries of protest are heard. The current health-care plan may not be the best solution but we do need to have the debate and we do need to find a way to make our current health-care system work better and be more affordable.

Just keep in mind the U.S. government has always been a mix of government systems and it’s not always the Democrats that nail us with taxes: don’t forget the Republican hero Ronald Reagan who raised taxes and government spending even more than many Democrats. It seems the only conservative we’ve had in regard to spending was Bill Clinton; what an irony.

We need to keep an open mind during these trying times; we need to think about what is going on around us and we need to use our reason and the vast amount of information available to us to make wise choices. The screaming, ignorance and hatred are going to be our undoing before anything else
