After nearly 30 years of Thursday evening Kent Summer Concerts at Lake Meridian Park, city leaders decided to change the venue to Morrill Meadows Park.
“The primary reason for the shift is that Morrill Meadows Park will provide concert goers with easy access to much more parking in close proximity to the venue,” said Ronda Billerbeck, city of Kent Cultural Programs manager, in a June 30 email. “With parking available at the park and at the Kent United Methodist Church just to the east, there should be plenty of parking without an offsite location and shuttle service.”
Seattle-based Heart By Heart will open the new Thursdays Music in the Meadow series from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 10 at Morrill Meadows Park, 10600 SE 248th St.
“While Lake Meridian was a beautiful concert setting, parking was a significant challenge, especially on warm summer days when lots of people access the park for waterfront activities,” Billerbeck said. “We were hearing feedback from residents who wanted to come to the concerts but felt that having to park off-site and catch a shuttle was an inconvenient barrier. Moving the concerts will not only offer better access to concert attendees, but it will also free up access at Lake Meridian for beach users.”
The city completed a $1.59 million renovation in 2024 at the 21-acre Morrill Meadows Park, including an expanded playground with improved ADA access, new swings, a brand-new nature play area, updated park furnishings, improved lawn space and a permanent stage.
“We are also excited about the pretty meadow setting at Morrill Meadows; its central location; flat, easy access for our beautiful new stage; and park amenities like the popular new playground and public outdoor play areas at the adjacent YMCA,” Billerbeck said.
The Lake Meridian Park setting, however, will be missed.
“We have loved hosting our Thursdays at the Lake concerts at Lake Meridian for nearly 30 years and have been carefully considering this move for a couple of years now,” Billerbeck said. “It was a tough, but well-considered decision, and we are now very excited to move into a new era of Music in the Meadow concerts. We have a fantastic lineup of performers this year and hope to see lots of Kent residents out at the concerts.”
Kent Summer Concerts go from July 9 to Aug. 20 with free entertainment at three venues. City of Kent Parks presents Wednesday and Thursday shows, Kent Station presents Wednesday concerts.
