What are the key things to look for when buying protein powder?


As you’ve seen from the reviews, there are so many different types of protein powder out there. We’ve barely scratched the surface, by the way, these are just our picks of the top protein powder supplements in 2021; there are loads of others that didn’t make the cut.

With that in mind, it’s natural to wonder how we ranked the best from the rest. Was it a case of personal preference? Did we get paid by some brands to sneak them in here? No and no; we have a list of things that we take into account when reviewing all the different protein supplements:

Amount of protein per serving

How much protein does the supplement provide per serving size? We’ve written that bit in bold because it’s super important. The serving size determines how much powder you need to scoop into your shaker every time you drink it. For reference, the little scoops that come with protein powder tend to all be around 70ml in volume. What we found was that many companies would claim to have loads of protein in their product, but it would be based on, say, 100g of the powder.

Generally, 15 to 25 grams of protein per serving is all you’ll need. Of course, we gave preference to supplements that had large amounts of protein per serving because it’s just more beneficial for you. As an example, you might find some products that boast 30g per 100g. Okay, that’s great, but with a 70g scoop, you’d need nearly two scoops to get that 30g. By contrast, a supplement with 25g per serving means you dish up one scoop and get your 25g right there. It means the product lasts for longer and it’s also much easier to weigh out your protein.

So, if a product has a good amount of protein per scoop, it scores highly on our ranking system.

Protein quality

Next, we paid close attention to the protein quality in the supplements. As you might be aware, there are various types of protein that protein powders are made from. The most common of all is whey protein, which is made from the liquid part of milk that separates when cheese is made. The whey is taken, processed, and turned into a powder.

You’ve also got casein, which is taken from the curds that are left when cheese is made, and it is also processed to a powder form. Then, you have a range of plant-based proteins – like soy, hemp, and pea.

So, how did we deduce which protein was the best quality? Firstly, we looked at the sources – if it came from a high-quality source, we ranked it higher as it would provide you with a better quality of protein. Secondly, both whey and casein protein powders are considered complete proteins. This means they include all nine essential amino acids that our bodies don’t produce. Plant-based proteins – apart from pea – aren’t complete proteins as they lack some of these essential amino acids.

As such, for people not following a plant-based diet, we deemed it better to opt for high-quality whey or casein. Of course, we still had some plant-based options, in which case we compared them against one another rather than other protein powders. Here, we wanted to find the best plant-based protein powders with the most complete amino acid profile and highest quality protein source.

Macronutrients & micronutrients

Believe it or not, protein isn’t the only important nutrient in protein powder. These powders are made up of different macronutrients to help fuel your body. Here, we paid close attention to the balance of macronutrients in each powder, primarily; how many carbs were there per serving?

Now, this was only important as it counted towards the total calories per serving of the protein powder. For context, our bodies need calories to burn to create energy. However, if you are trying to lose weight, you can’t consume more calories than you burn or you will start gaining weight. As such, we looked at a range of protein powders with different calories depending on your goals.

If you want to gain muscle and add weight, opt for protein powders that have extra carbs to give you more calories. These are typically marketed as ‘mass gainers’ or something similar. If you want to lose weight, look for protein powders without many carbs, so they are low-calorie options.

Alongside this, we also rated protein powders with additional micronutrients very highly. These are the smaller nutrients that aren’t technically essential, but do a lot of good when we consume them. We’re talking about vitamins and minerals here. If you can find a protein powder that gives you a boost of vitamins/minerals, it’s always a plus.


What ingredients are used in the protein powder supplement?

Typically, the best protein powders use natural ingredients. This includes the protein source, possibly some added vitamins and minerals, and so on. We always prefer supplements that keep things as natural as possible – when unnatural ingredients start getting added, it ruins the health profile of the supplement.

Additionally, we found that some of the best protein powders included added ingredients like BCAAs to further enhance the effects of the protein. BCAAs are branched-chain amino acids. They have been shown to promote muscle protein synthesis, meaning your body absorbs and uses protein more effectively. BCAAs have also been linked to reducing muscle damage. Therefore, adding them to protein powder should improve the way it interacts with your body, leading to better benefits.

Of course, proteins with poor ingredients didn’t feature on our list as it’s never a good idea to take any supplements that don’t have high-quality ingredients on the packaging.


How did the product taste?

It’s all well and good having a fantastic protein powder that’s nutritionally amazing. But, it’s worthless if it tastes like garbage. Sadly, this is one of the big problems with protein powder as it can taste pretty awful at times. This is why every manufacturer tries their best to use natural flavorings to make them taste like chocolate, vanilla, salted caramel, and so on.

Ultimately, the best protein powder is one that tastes good. Now, the taste can be subjective – we might love the taste of a chocolate protein powder, but you could hate it. However, things like texture and mixability aren’t subjective at all. Too many protein powders don’t mix well and end up lumpy or grainy. This leads to a horrible tasting experience! The best protein powders will mix perfectly and be nice and smooth.

So, the taste was largely measured based on those two things, rather than putting too much emphasis on the flavors. Of course, if we thought something tastes nice, we’ll tell you – and vice versa. But, remember, you can add flavorings to protein powders at home to make them taste better anyway.

Value for money

Obviously, we can’t review protein powders without taking the costs into account. Value for money is key here – the price alone isn’t always going to mean something is good or bad. You can get protein supplements for under $20, but does that mean you’re getting great value for money? The quality could be poor, the amount you get is so little that you run out quickly, etc.

Likewise, an expensive protein powder isn’t necessarily the best one around – it can have flaws and be a complete waste of money!

Protein Powder FAQs

Do you need protein powder supplements?

Technically speaking, you don’t need a protein powder supplement. However, it can be useful for lots of different people with specific health & fitness goals.

The key question to ask here is: how much protein do you need?

Well…this is where things get confusing.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is only 0.8 grams per kg of body weight. That’s really not that much at all, and it equates to around 10% of your total daily calorie consumption. However, research suggests that a better target is around twice the RDA, so it could mean you’re eating 25% of total calories as protein.

If you want to build muscle, it’s suggested that elite athletes eat 2g or more per kg of body weight per day. So, your protein requirements continue to increase depending on your goals. This is where you have to look at your current diet and consider how much protein you eat. Are you reaching your daily protein goals through high-quality food sources alone? If so, a protein supplement isn’t that useful for you.

However, if you struggle to get all your protein in through meals and snacks, a protein supplement acts as a nice little boost to help you reach your targets.
