An apartment fire in Kent May 15 displaces a family. An infant was treated for smoke inhalation and released from the hospital.

The Kent Fire Department and Des Moines Fire Department emergency units were dispatched to a report of an apartment fire at the 4800 block of Kent Des Moines Roadin Kent.

The first arriving units reported heavy, thick, dark smoke from the apartment and filling the common hallway of the building.  Due to the large number of people living in the building a second alarm was immediately called bringing additional fire department units from South King County Fire (Federal Way), Valley Regional Fire Authority (Auburn) and King County Medic One.

The fire was contained to one bottom floor apartment unit and was quickly extinguished.  Fire crews searched the building for any fire extension and ventilated the building using large blowers to remove the smoke from the hallways and apartments.

A 10-day-old newborn was transported to a local hospital for evaluation of possible smoke inhalation.  The infant was evaluated and released from the hospital a couple of hours later. No other injuries were reported to either residents or firefighters.

One family was displaced as a result of the fire and will be staying with family locally.  The cause of the fire was found to be food left unattended cooking on the stove and was determined to be accidental by the Fire Investigator.
