There will be no school on Tuesday, Aug. 30 in the Kent School District as a contract dispute between teachers and district negotiators continues.
“Kent School District has been in meetings with Kent Education Association (teachers’ union) or the mediator every day for the past seven days,” according to a district statement Monday evening, Aug. 29. “We are committed to daily negotiations until an agreement is reached.
“We know it is in the best interest of students to be in school and we recognize the hardship this creates for families. After experiencing the educational disruptions and emotional impacts of COVID-19, it is more important than ever that our students return to the classroom.”
The dispute continues over pay, better mental health services for students and smaller class sizes and caseloads, according to the union.
The Kent School Board will consider Monday evening, Aug. 29 whether to follow district staff’s recommendation to file a lawsuit in King County Superior Court in an effort to get a judge to order the teachers back to the classroom.
The strike began on Aug. 25.
