King County Sheriff’s Office divers recovered the body of a 23-year-old Federal Way man at about 7 a.m. Jan. 27 in Star Lake, just south of the Kent city limits.
The man was identified Jan. 28 as Jason L. Bare, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, which ruled his death an accidental drowning.
Bare had been reported missing after the row boat he was in with two other people took on water and capsized at about 1:10 a.m. Jan. 27 at the lake in unincorporated King County, according to a Sheriff’s Office media release.
Bare’s two companions, a man and woman both age 21, were able to swim to shore and were uninjured.
The incident began when the three rowed across the lake to the Star Lake Tavern in a small boat. As they were rowing back to the home where the woman lived, the bow of the boat went under water and the boat began to sink.
All three started swimming for shore but Bare didn’t make it.
A homeowner along Star Lake called 911 at about 7 a.m. Jan. 27 to report something floating underneath his dock. Deputies responded and found the Federal Way man’s body.
Divers from the Sheriff’s Office and at least one homeowner searched the lake with a personal boat as well for three hours after the incident, but no trace of Bare was found until the homeowner’s 911 call.
