Sisters Ashley and Allysa Swanson went home with their new cat

At 4:30 p.m. Jan. 2, sisters Ashley and Allysa Swanson went home with their new cat, named Patty. Patty was the first adopted pet of the New Year from the Kent animal shelter, according to a Regional Animal Services of King County media release.

“There are wonderful pets waiting for their new families at the shelter,” said Regional Animal Services of King County Manager Ken Nakatsu. “Adding a new pet to one’s family brings a great deal of happiness to a home as well as to the animal involved. This is a positive and hopeful way to start out the New Year now that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is behind us.”

Regional Animal Services of King County encourages everyone to start out the New Year in a positive and loving way by adopting or fostering a pet from the Kent regional shelter. The Kent facility houses many healthy, adoptable pets and also supports foster care for other homeless cats and dogs.

Regional animal services pet adoption fees include:

• Spay/neuter surgery

• Vaccinations (including rabies if the animal is over 4 months old)

• A veterinary health exam

• Collar

• Carrier (for cats)

• Leash (for dogs)

• License (varies by jurisdiction)

Adoption fees have been waived for adult cats during the winter flood season, which means residents can take home a new feline family member for just the cost of the license.

The Kent shelter is at 21615 64th Ave. S. The facility is open 3-6 p.m. Mondays; noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The regional animal service also operates the Store of Helping Orphaned Pets Everywhere, a storefront within Kent Station Shopping Center, 414 Ramsay Way. The Store of HOPE operates from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The public can drop off donations for pets at the Kent shelter, including towels, dog toys, cat toys, and kitten formula.

To view a list of adoptable pets before visiting the shelter, visit www.kingcounty.gov/pets.

For more information, call the shelter at 206-296-7387.
