The 2009 Miss Cornucopia Court is

Five local young women are in the running to be crowned Miss Cornucopia 2009 as the annual festival celebrating Kent approaches.

This year’s finalists are:

• Melissa Smith, 20, is the daughter of Jill and Randy Smith and a 2009 graduate of Highline Community College;

• Tina Chen, 17, is a student at Kent-Meridian High School and the daughter of Claire and Sean Hu;

• Megan Vermillion, 18, is a 2009 Kentridge graduate and daughter of Dana and Mark Vermillion;

• Savannah “Savvy” Diaz, 18, is the daughter of Melinda and David Diaz and is a 2009 graduate of Kent-Meridian; and

• Amenpreet “Amy” Khela, 18, a 2009 Kentwood graduate and daughter of Gurder Khela.

Miss Cornucopia will be crowned at 2 p.m. July 10 on the Main Stage, located in Town Square Park. Miss Cornucopia 2008, Nic Oliver, will be on hand to crown the winner.

The girls are judged on interviews, public speaking, community service and academics. Miss Cornucopia receives a $3,000 scholarship to attend the school of her choice.

The Royal Princess (runner-up) will also receive a $1,000 scholarship and there will be additional financial awards for academics and for community service.

Miss Cornucopia will reign over Cornucopia Days and will attend additional Seafair events around the region.
