Dawn Smith, a former Kent resident and a graduate of Kent-Meridian High School, was recently named the 2011 Texas Middle School Principal of the Year.
Smith, known as Dawn Bash when she graduated from Kent-Meridian in the early 1970s, was chosen in May for the award by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association. She is principal at Daniel Intermediate School in Duncanville, Texas.
Smith will represent Texas in October at the National Distinguished Principals program held in Washington, D.C. She will also be awarded a check for $10,000, thanks to a generous donation from long-time Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association business partners Horace Mann and Pearson.
“Dawn’s passion and love for education is truly a bright light,” said Sandi Borden, executive director of the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association. “Not only has she transformed education for many Duncanville students, she’s also served as a mentor to other award-winning school leaders.”
