A grease fire on a stove displaced two families Nov. 6 from a Kent apartment complex in the 22400 block of the Benson Road, also known as 108th Avenue Southeast.

The fire broke out about 2:45 p.m. Kent firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames visible from a second-floor apartment, according to a Kent Fire Department media release.

The fire spread throughout the kitchen. The unit had heat and smoke damage throughout. A first-floor apartment had water damage.

Nobody was hurt in the fire.

A woman told fire officials she was heating oil on the stove and fell asleep. She smelled smoke, woke up and evacuated the apartment with her small child. She then called 911.

Fire investigators estimated the damage to the units at $30,000.

The families are staying with relatives and at a local hotel.

Fire officials said oil heating on the stove should never be left unattended. If the oil catches fire, put a lid on the pan. The lid keeps the fire from spreading and smothers the fire.
