A construction worker found a grenade in a box on the side of the road in SeaTac on Monday morning.
The King County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Unit and FBI Bomb Unit retrieved the grenade and later found the device did not contain explosives.
The worker found the box at the intersection of South 168th Street and 37th Avenue South at about 8 a.m., according to a Sheriff’s Office media release.
The bomb technicians were unable to determine if the device contained explosives. The device was moved to a remote location and detonated. After detonation it was determined the device did not contain explosives. The grenade appeared to be an old cast iron grenade and may have been a training device.
A King County Sheriff’s Office bomb technician said even though the device did not contain explosives it is still a crime to “place a hoax device.” An investigation will be conducted to determine who placed the device at the scene.
