Health-care reform opponent McKenna coming to GOP event in Kent

State Attorney General Rob McKenna, among the high-profile Republican opponents of recent national health-care reform legislation passed last week, is the guest of honor Saturday at a GOP Caucus in Kent.

The 33rd Legislative District event, which is the district convention for the GOP, will be called to order at 3 p.m. at the Kent Commons.

The convention is open to the public and separate seating will be provided, although organizers say it will be limited.

The Kent Commons is located at 525 Fourth Ave. N.

For more information about the event, contact 33rd District Chairman Craig Dougherty at 206-251-5998.

McKenna made recent headlines when he joined a lawsuit with other attorneys general, mounting a constitutional challenge to President Obama’s controversial health-care plan.

“I believe this new federal health care measure unconstitutionally imposes new requirements on our state and on its citizens. This unprecedented federal mandate, requiring all Washingtonians to purchase health insurance, violates the Commerce Clause and the 10th amendment of the US Constitution,” McKenna said in a previously reported statement, when he announced his decision Monday to join the lawsuit.

That decision won him the ire of Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, who claimed McKenna didn’t represent her, small business, or the residents of Washington in need of health insurance.
