An inmate found dead in the King County jail at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent has been identified as Brandon Dean Burris.

Jail staff found the 27-year-old Burien man unresponsive in his single-person cell at about 7 p.m. Friday, May 1, during a routine security check, according to a county Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention media release. The jail and medical staff immediately tried to resuscitate the inmate. Medic 1 staff arrived and continued life-saving measures, but the inmate was still unresponsive. Medics pronounced him dead at 7:11 p.m.

The cause and manner of death is pending toxicology results, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office report on Tuesday, which identified Burris.

Burris was booked into the jail on April 28 for a warrant issued by King County Superior Court for failure to appear in court. He had been arrested previously on drug charges and mail theft, according to jail records. He also served five days in jail Dec. 5-10 after an arrest on drug charges.

As part of the standard review process for jail-related deaths, the county Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention will work with Public Health – Seattle & King County to conduct an internal investigation. The Kent Police Department will also conduct an independent investigation.

According to his Facebook page, Burris attended Kentlake High School and was a member of the Class of 2006.
