Gov. Jay Inslee appointed Mafé Rajul to the King County Superior Court. Rajul replaces Beth Andrus, who was recently named to the state Court of Appeals, Division 1.
Her appointment is effective in June.
Rajul serves as senior deputy prosecuting attorney in the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. She is the unit chair for the High Impact Priority Repeat Offenders Unit and vice chair of the Economic Crimes Unit, according to a press release Tuesday from Inslee. Rajul also served as legal adviser for the Valley Narcotics Enforcement Team and has served as lead prosecutor for the Repeat Burglar Initiative. Rajul has extensive trial experience in prosecuting violent and property crime offenders.
Rajul has also worked for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs in Honduras. She was a justice adviser to the Special Victims Task Force involving human rights allegations regarding members in the LGBTQ community.
“Mafé has a tremendous breadth of experience in complex and difficult legal situations,” Inslee said in the press release. “Her legal work coupled with her community service and life experiences will make her an outstanding addition to the bench.”
Before entering the legal profession, Rajul served for nearly 10 years as a certified court and medical interpreter and translator.
Her community experience includes service on the Seattle Police Department Latino Advisory Council and as a mock trial coach and judge for the University of Washington School of Law.
Rajul, a native of Colombia, was recently named to the executive board of the Washington State Coalition for Language Access.
She received her law degree from the University of Washington, where she also received her bachelor’s degree in society and justice.
