The Kent Black Action Commission presented a daylong event Saturday at the Kent Senior Center.
“Launching a Legacy: A Community that Cares” began at 10 a.m. and wrapped up at 10 p.m. with a host of speakers and activities.
The gathering was free and well attended.
Booths were set up and speakers discussed schools, mentoring, the homeless population, jobs and business ownership.
In the afternoon session Barbara Phillips discussed the East Hill Community Network Council and need for mentors.
“One thing is to get involved,” Phillips said. “Create our own voice and get involved.”
Jimmie James also spoke in the afternoon stating, “There comes a time when words are not enough. While we are sitting in a meeting someone is getting out of prison…. someone is losing their job… It takes more than words.”
Gwen Allen talked about how important the gathering was to her and the community. She said the event was a first step in bringing the community together and getting more people involved.
