Want to find out what the Kent City Council has to say about Mayor Suzette Cooke’s proposed 2011 budget?

Then check out the Council’s workshop about the budget at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in Council Chambers at City Hall, 220 Fourth Ave. S.

No public testimony is taken at workshops.

Residents can speak about the preliminary budget at a 5 p.m. Nov. 2 public hearing before the Council at City Hall.

The Council has final approval of the proposed $146 million operating budget, including a $62 million general fund budget. The Council expects to adopt the budget at a Dec. 14 meeting.

Cooke proposed the hiring of 16 employees in the 2011 budget. Most of those employees would be assigned to the Panther Lake area, whose 24,000 residents annexed to the city in July. Cooke also has proposed setting aside $1 million for an emergency flood fund in case the Green River floods this winter.

Residents can view the preliminary budget in the city clerk’s office at City Hall. For more information about the proposed budget, call the city finance department at 253-856-5264.
