With temperatures expected in the 80s and 90s through the weekend of July 9-11, the Kent Fire Department and the Office of Emergency Management has several tips about how to stay cool and beat the heat.
You can go visit an air-conditioned public facility including:
1: The Kent Commons – corner of Fourth Avenue North and West James Street.
2: King County libraries – corner of Second Avenue North and West Harrison Street in Kent; and at the corner of 164th Avenue Southeast and Kent-Kangley Road in Covington.
3: The Kent Senior Center – corner of East Smith Street and Kennebeck Avenue North.
All of the locations are open to the public throughout the day.
If you are looking to stay cool and still be out in the sun, stop by Kent’s Town Square Plaza, located at the intersection of Second Avenue North and West Harrison Street. The square offers a water fountain play area for kids.
Another alternative includes Kent’s Lake Meridian Park, 14800 Kent-Kangley Road, which offers swimming and grassy picnic areas. A life guard is on duty throughout the summer.
If you venture outside in the heat, consider the following safety tips:
1. Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. Limit your exposure when possible.
2. Remember that kids have sensitive skin and need more protection from the sun than adults.
3. Stay hydrated. Drink non-alcoholic liquids often.
4. Never leave kids or pets in a vehicle – even for a short period of time.
5. Call 911 for any heat related emergencies.
6. Remember that the hottest part of the day is in the late afternoon. Plan accordingly.
