Kent Police chase, stop two suspects in carjacking

Kent Police and a King County Sheriff’s Office helicopter chased down two men Wednesday suspected of a carjacking at about 11:44 a.m. on the East Hill.

A man met two other men and a woman Tuesday night at a local motel, according to an email from Kent Police Cmdr. Rob Scholl. The man agreed to drive them up to the East Hill on Wednesday morning.

At about 11:44 a.m. at the Timber Ridge Apartments/Condos, 25010 98th Pl. S., they have the man stop, threaten him with a gun and take his car. Officers saw the car going west on James Street and then found it unoccupied at about 11:49 a.m. at the Kent Station shopping center, Scholl said.

Witnesses told officers they saw two men run from the vehicle and the direction they ran. At about 11:55 a.m., police find two men ages 18 to 20 who matched the description of the suspects.

After officers identified the two men and talked to them, they were unable to develop probable cause to arrest them, so the men were released. The case has been referred to detectives for a follow-up investigation, Scholl said.

The Sheriff’s Office tweeted at about noon that one of its helicopters had helped in the search for the carjacking suspects near Kent Station.
