Forty Kent schools opened the 2011-12 year Thursday with more than 27,000 students in the classrooms.

Students strolled into Kent Elementary School along West Meeker Street (see slide show) as well as 27 other elementary schools.

The Kent School District also has four high schools, six middle schools and two academies.

Students will attend school for two days and then get Monday off for Labor Day.

The school year includes winter vacation from Dec. 21-Jan. 3 and spring vacation from April 9-13. The last day of school is scheduled for June 15 with June 18-19 as makeup days if necessary.

Teachers approved a new two-year contract with the district on Aug. 30.
