Despite 10 nominations for three Kent schools at the eighth annual 5th Avenue High School Musical Theatre Awards show June 7 in Seattle, no Kent school or student came away with top honors.

Three Kent students were honored as finalists. They were Natalie Lawrence, of Kentridge, for her part as Maria Rainer in “The Sound of Music;” Jacob Axelson, of Kentlake, for his part as Emile in “South Pacific;” and Saxton Walker, of Kentwood, for his part as Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz.”

As finalists for the outstanding leading actors and actresses, Lawrence and Axelson sung portions of a song from their productions on the 5th Avenue stage during the awards show.

Overall, Kentridge received seven nominations, Kentlake two and Kentwood one nomination.

Officials at the 5th Avenue Theatre sent professionals to more than 100 high school productions across the state to pick the top nominees for the annual awards show.

TVW taped the show to be broadcast on Comcast Channel 23 in Kent at 7 p.m. June 11 and 1 p.m. June 13. For more information, go to www.tvw.org.
