City officials fixed a pump Thursday to get the Rotary sphere water sculpture at the new Town Square Plaza Park operating again after a temporary shutdown.

City officials planned to work last weekend to test and turn water back on for the spray fountains at the park that had been shut down when a chemical pump that provides chlorine to the fountains failed to work properly, City Parks Director Jeff Watling said Thursday. The Washington State Department of Health requires chlorine in public water fountains.

The fountains had just been activated and were working properly for the grand opening of the park on June 28. The urban park is at the corner of West Smith Street and Second Avenue.

The pump underneath the sphere had to be re-programmed at a constant pressure to keep the 13,000-pound granite sphere spinning at the center of the park, Watling said. City officials plan to keep the water pumping to the Rotary sphere 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The ground-level spray fountains, once they are working properly, will operate 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. City officials hope to have the spray fountains working in time for the Kent Cornucopia Days street fair that runs Friday through Sunday.
