Kent firefighters collected more than 5,000 gifts for more than 2,000 children during the 2009 Toys for Joy program.
The final numbers were released Dec. 30 by the Kent Fire Department. The toys were delivered Dec. 22 to the Kent Food Bank to be distributed to families.
Firefighters collect new, unwrapped toys for needy children each holiday season at local fire stations and City Hall. Volunteers sort and wrap the toys before delivery to the food bank and other local groups.
More than 250 people, including those from school and church groups and service clubs, participated in two toy-wrapping parties at Kent Fire Station 75.
The Kent Fire Department, the Kent Firefighters Foundation, and Kent Firefighters Local 1747 issued a media release Dec. 30 to thank everyone who donated, wrapped, and helped deliver the toys.
“The generosity of local residents and businesses is what allows the Toys for Joy program to be successful,” according to the media release. “Special thanks go out to Door to Door Storage of Kent for their annual donation of portable storage units and to Bowen Scarff Ford for their continued support of the program.”
