A Kent woman is among the 20 finalists for Ms. Veteran America.
Sara Sharp, a retired Sergeant First Class Military Police officer, will compete for the title Sunday, Oct. 13 at The National Conference Center in Leesburg, Va.
Contestants are scored in four categories – Interview, Talent, Military History and Advocacy, according to the Ms. Veteran America website. Scoring criteria includes grace, poise, confidence and personality.
Sharp served 18 years in the Army after joining the Military Police Corps in 1981. She volunteers for several non-profit groups and is pursuing her doctorate degree in education. She is the wife of Ken Sharp, a Kent City Council candidate.
Elizabeth Luras, of Auburn, also is a finalist. She is a disabled Army Veteran and Oregon native who works for World Vision.
The Ms. Veteran America contest started last year to showcase women beyond the uniform. Competitors ranged in age from 21 to 89.
Grand prizes include $15,000 towards the purchase of a vehicle or scholarship towards education (theirs or their children or grandchildren) or student loan repayment (must be in good standing) or full scholarship to Paul Mitchell Beauty and Cosmetology School or starting their own business or down payment towards a home purchase or home repairs.
Proceeds from the event benefit Final Salute Inc., which provides safe and suitable housing for homeless female veterans.
