King County Assessor Lloyd Hara and Kent Councilwoman Brenda Fincher host a meeting about 2015 property tax valuations from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Kona Kai Coffee, 124 Fourth Ave. S.

The King County Assessor’s Office recently mailed the property valuations in the Kent area. Hara and representatives from the county’s Department of Assessments will be on hand to explain the property assessment process, and provide an update on the real estate market and property exemptions eligibility.

The Assessor’s Office annually revalues all properties and conducts a physical inspection of each property once every six years.

The 2015 property values are set as of January 1, 2015, and assessed at the full market value based on sales of comparable properties in the same area. For more information about property values, contact the Assessor’s Office at 206-296-7300, or email assessor.info@kingcounty.gov.

Property owners have 60 days after the mailing date listed on the property valuation notice to file an appeal of their assessed value with the Board of Appeals/Equalization. The Board is an independent body, separate from the Assessor’s Office, and is comprised of King County residents.

• Taxing districts are held to a 1 percent annual increase limit in property tax revenue regardless of the change in property values, unless voters approve special levies.

• Overall, property taxes increased by 4.11 percent in 2015, but individual property taxes vary depending on the property location.

• Individual property taxes are calculated based on the assessed value of a property, the total taxable property value in the community, voter-approved measures, and the budgets adopted by local governments.

•17.5 cents of every property tax dollar supports services provided by King County government.

Some low-income seniors, disabled veterans, and disabled persons retired because of a disability may be eligible for a property tax deferral or exemption. The King County Assessor’s Office encourages you or those you know to contact the office to determine eligibility.
