The Medical Reserve Corps is having an orientation for volunteers at the Kent Senior Center, 600 E. Smith St., from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb 21.
The corps is a network in the U.S. of community-based units initiated and established by local organizations to meet the public health needs of communities. It was established as a result of the lessons learned on 9/11. Many people stepped forward and wanted to volunteer their services. However, there was not an existing system in place to verify credentials and skills in advance.
In response, the MRC was started to draw health care professionals; as well as non-health care workers into an established organization where volunteers are trained and deployed when the existing response systems become overwhelmed. MRC’s may also be utilized to assist with on-going public health initiatives.
