For the Reporter

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra has been hard at work putting together its sixth annual Summer Music Camp.

The camp runs Aug. 5-9 from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. daily at Maple Valley Presbyterian Church, 22659 Sweeney Road SE. The camp culminates in a 7 p.m. concert Aug. 9.

This year’s theme is “Tunes from Toons.” They orchestra will study music from animated films such as Disney’s “Brave.”

“Camp is one of my favorite MVYSO traditions,” said Elisa Lewis, MVYSO executive director. “We make it high quality and low cost to give every student the opportunity to come together in a big, fun way to work toward a common goal of making great music.”

The camp features a full staff of highly qualified coaches for every instrument section, performances by professional musicians, opportunities for small ensemble work, activities, a lunch program and more.

The camp is $75 and every student will receive a camp T-shirt.

Students who with one school year of playing experience through the most advanced student will find challenge and success. The MVYSO has designed a unique opportunity for students with less experience to play along with more advanced students and receive specialized coaching at their level.

“It’s always fun to see all of our camp students grow in confidence over the week,” Lewis said.

Last year’s concert had 140 students performing.

“Even if you don’t have a student who is a part of our camp, the concert is a treat,” Lewis said. “I’m always amazed at what a large group of highly motivated students can pull off in a week.”
