World Refugee Day to be honored locally at Kent and Renton libraries

In honor of World Refugee Day 2011 there will be a series of free one-hour cultural orientations at the Kent Library and the Renton Library. The orientations offer people working with refugees an opportunity to learn about diverse cultures of the newly resettled community members. Key phrases of the languages will be taught enabling refugees a warmer more encouraging welcome to the community.

A crowd of more than 75 packed the Kent City Council Chambers Tuesday, June 7, after the city delivered letters to four businesses stating they were illegally dispensing medical marijuana. The people attending the meeting came in support of the medical marijuana businesses and asked the city to allow the facilities to remain open.

Kent’s Meridian Elementary to throw 70th birthday party June 10

The community is invited to attend the 70th birthday party of Meridian, the oldest operating school in the Kent School District. Current and former students, teachers and staff are all invited to share memories about the school, view school memorabilia and enjoy cake, coffee and punch. Four current Meridian teachers also attended the school.
