Pedestrian, 42, dies in Kent collision with vehicle | Update: Man identified

Auburn man killed while trying to cross East Valley Highway Dec. 23 identified by medical examiner

A vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian, a 42-year-old Auburn man, Tuesday evening, Dec. 23 in Kent in the 18200 block of East Valley Highway.

Frederick T. Charles died of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office Dec. 24 report.

Officers were dispatched at about 5:24 p.m. in response to multiple 911 calls of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle, according to a Dec. 24 Kent Police news release. The callers said that a man was significantly injured and unconscious.

Officers and Puget Sound Fire firefighters arrived and began to provide medical aid, including CPR, according to police. Medics transported Charles to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, but he did not survive.

Witnesses said Charles was crossing East Valley Highway from east to west with another pedestrian and was struck by a southbound vehicle. He was reportedly not in a crosswalk, according to police.

The driver of the involved vehicle, a 46-year-old Auburn man, stayed on scene and was cooperative with investigating officers, according to police. The vehicle involved is a Volkswagen sedan. Initial evidence gathered by officers indicated that alcohol and drug use did not appear to be a factor in the collision.

The second pedestrian crossing the road at the same time was not struck or injured.

The Kent Police Traffic Unit continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the crash.
